Report reveals cost of cancer misdiagnosis and delayed diagnosis of cancer claims

01 May 2024

United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust have reportedly paid out £2.7 million in damages for misdiagnosis and delay in cancer diagnosis.

The Health Ombudsman for England has warned that many cancer patients across the country could be put at risk due to misdiagnosis and delays in treatment.

The worrying issue has been noticed across NHS Trust with ULHT in particular having 25 such claims lodged against them since 2019.  They have paid out the second highest amount of damages.

The NHS have paid out a total of £128 million on similar misdiagnosis of cancer claims in the past five years and £77.7 million in claims for delays in cancer diagnosis in the past five years

Kalpna Patel, Specialist Clinical Negligence Litigation Executive said of the report: 'It is clearly essential to correctly interpret any test results and form a treatment plan for any type of cancer diagnosis in a timely manner so that the patient is hopefully able to return to their former quality of life as quickly as possible'.
